Color Guard / Winter Guard

The McLean High School Color Guard is a vital component of the Marching Band, and it continues to grow each year. Under the direction of Lindell Palmer the Color Guard consists of student athlete/performers who spin, toss, dance and perform with flags, rifles and sabres to enhance the Marching Band field show performance. They are integral to the Marching Band in the summer and fall, and may not necessarily be members of the band music program. Participating in color guard demands athleticism, coordination, strength, artistry and a passion to perform!

At the conclusion of the fall marching season the McLean Winter Guard program begins. Two winter guard teams (Red and Silver) train and compete in the Scholastic division in theĀ  Winter Guard, and competition circuits. Students will audition for placement on the Red and Silver teams.

A third winter guard team, the Grey team, may be formed if needed, to teach guard fundamentals and develop skills. The Grey team may also compete in local competitions to gain performance competition experience. Participation in Winter Guard is a great way for current McLean students to continue to develop performance skills after Marching Band season, and it is a great opportunity for middle school students to get an early start learning alongside high school student-athletes in one of the largest guard programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia!
